From 1950 to 1975 the land where the ARC is now located was used as a radar installation for the United States Air Force and served as a first line of alert in case of enemy invasion. Due to the end of the Cold War and improved technology, the base was closed in 1975. In 1979 the base was purchased by the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations (AFLC) to establish a Bible Camp and Retreat Center and became known as The Association Retreat Center (ARC).

The ARC has grown to become a year-round Camp and Retreat Center serving a variety of groups ranging from school and craft groups to church groups from virtually every denomination.
